The largest controversy surrounded William Shakespeare is the Shakespeare authorship question. The argument is that possibly, someone else wrote the works that he was rewarded for. Some say that Shakespeare was a front to shield the identity of the authors who, for some reason, did not want to or could not be identified. Although it has been a widely discussed topic, few historians accept the theory as valid. Those that believe Shakespeare is not the author think that his background in education and literacy do not match up with the complexity of his work. In his signatures, his name is spelled Shake-Speares, instead of Shakespeare. Some believe that this misspelling is actually a secret nickname coined by the actual author. There is also very little documentation of his career and life in general. There is no documentation of any public mourning of his death, except for the poems and eulogies that were published seven years after his passing. Because of the lack of documentation, there is certainly room for doubt.
